In most every Drupal installation, there are a few (if not more) modules you inevitably end up installing and using.
Two of these are likely CCK and Views*. Then, all the other, shall we say, essential modules you end up hearing about, and installing as well.
So, your next question may be, "What's the fastest way to get started with Drupal?". If you know CVS then that may be a good way to go (it's the method I use). If you don't, then...
Why not get going quickly by trusting in some of the minds behind Drupal itself? Acquia Drupal is the "commercialized" version of Drupal. Although there is a free version too! It comes with a pre-installed collection of modules which all pretty much fall within the essential category. I just wonder why they didn't include Global Redirect if they're including Pathauto.
Using the Acquia Network, you'll get some monitoring which you would normally have to set up on your own by install other tools. Watch this video for an overview of the installation process for Acquia Drupal.

I just wonder why they didn’t include Global Redirect if they’re including Pathauto.
Because Global Redirect is not very useful. As Google has stated clearly very many times, they do not care if you have a page that shows up on multiple URLs on your site. Don't get sucked in by all the SEO voodoo that accomplishes little to nothing.
Dalin, your completely missing the point, I realise the description on the Global Redirect page is misleading but Global Redirect is a way to ensure that the correct URLs get used on your site.
For example I want my users to see example.com/stuff not example.com/?q=node/323228. Not only is it nicer and easier to remember but it DOES make a difference to what you call "SEO voodoo", because If users see both these URLs and start linking to both the link juice from backlinks is spread between two URLs and will affect the SERPs. Not only this but Google isn't going to know what URL to use on the SERPs so you could end up with users always seeing example.com/?q=node/323228.
Thank you for this video and for all the other useful videos.
Acquia installation seems ti exceed the 30 seconds limit of php on my laptop. They should tweak this process a little bit, especially if their intended targets are newbies who don't always know how to change this limit or are too lazy like me to change it.
Your tips is very useful to me. I don't understand how to install, but by the tips I learn and I had tried and the result is done:) classifieds |ads|orange county restaurants
Great video really helped me understand Acquia more. Thanks!
Matt thanks for your masterful video tutorials. They have been very helpful in understanding Drupal, which was a mystery for me for years and drove me to use WordPress.
I have built a new site[ a social networking site] on the Acquia Drupal multisite stack on my local machine, and wanted rebuild my other static sites and WordPress sites on this. [BTW, the WordPress sites were installed manually, and some using Fantastico
But I am at a loss on how to upload Acquia and the site I have created. There appears to be nothing on the Acquia site on this.
How do I install the new website to and create the others using Acquia. Do I install Acquia,or just part of the stack, or just the website files? If so how?
If there are resources that I have missed I would appreciate a link to it.
Your kindly assist in this would be appreciated.
